Okiwi School is a full primary school located in the north of Great Barrier Island (Aotea), in the rohe of Ngati Rehua Ngati Wai ki Aotea. The school’s vision is for localised curriculum which reflects the relationship to the environment and the community, in particular the marae at Motairehe and Kawa.
Okiwi School has a rich history that reflects the unique challenges and spirit of the island community. The school was established in 1876, making it one of the oldest schools on the island. It serves a small, rural population, and over the years, it has been a central part of the local community, providing education to children living on the island.
Aotea Great Barrier Island does not have a centralized power or water supply. At Okiwi School, we generate electricity primarily using solar energy. We also collect rainwater and stream water to meet the school’s water needs.
OUR VALUES:
Awhinatanga
Our kura envelops the kaupapa of tuakana / teina (pairing of older/younger students) in appropriate activities both inside and outside the classroom.
Manaakitanga
Our kura has an ‘open door’ policy where any member of the community is supported to share their talents with tamariki and reciprocated in kind.
Whanaungatanga
Our kura fosters the concept of ‘kinship’ and has established positive relationships with Ngati Rehua, Ngati Wai, Kaitoke & Mulberry Grove schools, Department of Conservation, Auckland City Council, along with other community groups and businesses. This further enhances our students’ experiences and resources in conjunction with mainstream education.
The Education Review Office (ERO) | Te Tari Arotake Mātauranga
ERO is the New Zealand government’s external education evaluation agency. ERO evaluates and report on the education and care of learners in schools, kura, kōhanga reo, puna reo, and early childhood services.
